Thursday Story-Telling The Intervention Chapter 8

Britney was still sitting at her boss’ desk when the room suddenly became darker and began to fill with smoke. She couldn’t see anything. She was very afraid and started to wonder if this was it. Was she finally dying? Had she been floating long enough?

“Britney” she heard someone whisper her name. Who was calling her?

“Britney!”

She suddenly recognized the voice. It was her mother. “Mom! Where are you? I can’t see you.”
“I am here Brit. I need you to just listen, OK?”

“OK” her voice was shaking and she knew that she must be dead. Her mother was hear to take her with her.

“Brit you are hearing me, because you are finally able to listen now. I have been trying to reach you for quite sometime, young lady. You have been headed down a bad path. I know that you have been having problems with Anthony, and you don’t feel like you can go forward and you certainly can’t go backwards. It was time for me to step in. I didn’t want it to be this way, but your head is too full with the fighting, worrying about work, and other things that aren’t important that you couldn’t hear me. I didn’t want to have to get your attention this way but it was necessary.”

“The car accident? That was you? Mom, you wouldn’t put my life in danger.”

“No honey, the car accident was not me. That was you not paying attention; the coma was my doing. I can not let you wake up until I have told you what you need to know.”

“I am not dead?”

“No, it is not your time. You have a lot of work left to do. Part of that work has to be done with a very special person by your side.”

“Who? Who is going to be by my side?”

“Anthony.”

“What? Mom we fight all the time. I love him but I don’t think that we are going to stay together. I can’t continue this way and I know that he can’t either.”

“Well honey he can’t, but you have to fix it. You two are going to have children that are meant to do great things in this world. It is very important that you fix this. You love him and you can get through this.”

“But we drive each other crazy. I wouldn’t want to bring children into that. How could they possibly end up great? They would end up more messed up then me and Anthony individually.”

“We all have our struggles and we all have our special qualities that make us unique. No one is perfect and we have to love each other for our hearts not for our annoying habits. You have to remember it is OK to not like everything about each other. You just have to remember that you love each other. You are not messed up either, but apart you would be.”

“I do love him. I do want to fix things. Can you tell me what happened? Can you tell me where it went wrong? What can I do to make it better?”

“I can’t give you all the answers. I have already told you more than I should have. But I can tell you this, the next time you get mad at him or one of his little habits makes you want to yell at him, just remember how you feel at this exact moment knowing that you can’t hold him and let him know how much you love him. Remember what it is like knowing that you can’t have his arms around you and know that you are going to be safe. Is that something you could truly live without?”

“No, I don’t think that I could. I couldn’t stand to be away from him for another minute. I want to be with him, I want to be with him right now actually.” Tears started to fall down Britney’s face. She could feel them. She had to be waking up. She had to be.

“Britney, you won’t always hear me and you won’t be able to see me, but I love you and I will always be with you in your hear. If you are really quiet, you will hear me. I will help you through this. Make sure that you pray a lot and keep Anthony close and remember that a career that brings personal accomplishment will never equal the feeling in your heart that comes from your family and those that love you, regardless of your title at work.”

“I will Mom. I will. I love you so much. Can’t I see you before you? Can’t I have a hug? Just one last time.”

“I am sorry Brit. I can’t. I am not able, but believe me, honey I am here for you I promise.”

“But I am not ready for you to go. I need to know more. I need your help. Will he forgive me for everything?”

“When you wake up, you will know how to fix it. I am sure of it.”

The smoke began to clear and Britney was floating around the corridors of the office building. She went to her desk and sat in her chair. It was strange, she couldn’t really feel the chair as she had felt Kathy’s but she was sitting in it. She looked at the pictures on her desk. She saw pictures of her friends and their kids. She found almost too many pictures of Anthony and her, they were so happy in all of them. She knew that her mother had been right, and she was going to fix things with him. She was going to make it better as she looked at the pictures of them together on vacations and during holidays, she knew that she could fix it. She knew that whatever was supposed to come of them and their children, it would happen.

Thursday Story-Telling The Intervention Chapter 7

Anthony still sitting in the waiting room was ready to go crazy. He couldn’t imagine what could be taking so long. Someone surely would be able to come out and tell him something soon. He thought back to when he had first met Britney. They had met at work. Anthony had been visiting from a sister company and she had been in the same training class with him. He had fallen in love with her from the first moment he saw her.

Britney was stunning. She was wearing a black flowing skirt and a purple sweater, it was low cut, and he of course, had checked her out. He couldn’t help it. Anthony was a man after all. Britney busted him checking her out and laughed about it. He couldn’t believe that she hadn’t slapped him. She just stood there and laughed at him. He knew right then that he had to get to know this girl better. She was something very special.

They were in the training session together for two weeks, and ended up going to lunch together everyday. She was so smart and funny; he had never met a woman that could match his quick wit. Then on the last day of class, she wasn’t there. He didn’t want to ask about her and let everyone know that something could be going on. There really wasn’t anything going on, at least not anything that Britney knew about. She finally came in, and looked flushed. She apologized hurriedly and took her seat. She smiled at him from across the room. That simple smile let him know that she was glad he was there. That smile could light up a whole building let alone a room.

He would find out later that being on time was not her strong suit, and it would be the cause of many arguments later. But that same smile, would also end many of those arguments and make him feel like the only man on the world more times than Britney would ever know. After training ended on that final day, the whole class decided to go out for drinks. Anthony made it his business to make sure that he was at the same table as she was. They talked the whole night, and they hit it off completely, but he was going back to his job and she to hers. He didn’t want to start something that would be complicated by work as well as distance. He lived 1000 miles away.

They, however, continued their friendship for the next six months, and then one day he got the phone call that changed both of their lives forever. Britney’s mother had died. She needed him. He took off from work and went to be with her. When the dust had settled and Britney was better, he still couldn’t bring himself to leave her. So he found a new job and moved to be near her. She had needed him so much then, and he couldn’t have imagined a place he wanted to be more than beside her always. Now he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to be beside her ever again, and he felt as if his heart would stop beating right there.

Thursday Story-Telling The Intervention Chapter 6

Britney found herself floating above her own desk at work. She saw her cubicle neighbor Samantha working as normal. She wished she could be doing the same thing. What a strange thought. She found herself realizing how odd it was. She wasn’t sure if she was dreaming or dead, but she would rather be at work?

She floated to her boss’s office. Kathy Greene, so much more than just a boss, she was one of Britney’s best friends. The week Anthony and she had spent with Kathy and her husband at their lake house had been one of the best memories she had of her relationship with Anthony. Anthony and she had not fought the entire week and they had actually had a wonderful time with another couple. Nights had been filled with friendly chatter and wine drinking.

The trip had only been a couple of months ago, yet the relationship with Anthony had dwindled from those glorious nights shortly after they returned home. Perhaps the peace had come simply because they had been with another couple and not wanted to embarrass themselves but she had a distinct feeling that there was another reason that week had been so wonderful. She just couldn’t place her finger on it. Britney floated through the door of her boss’s office and she found it empty. She discovered it was only 9 AM as she glanced at the computer and saw the time on the bottom corner. Where could Kathy be?

As she sat in the chair, Britney couldn’t help but wish that someday it would be hers. She had worked hard at the marketing firm and wanted to grow and have her career with this company. After she was better, if that was a possibility, if she woke up; she would make sure that she was at work on time everyday and that she stayed late. She was ready to give 100 percent to all of her accounts and really prove herself. This desperate desire for a career had been part of Anthony and her problems all along.

She wanted a career so badly that she worked long hours, and she spent more time in the office at times then she did with him. He only wanted her. She had felt at the time that he just didn’t want her to be successful. How could she have thought that? She realized now looking around the office that Kathy couldn’t have much of a life either. She didn’t even have a picture of her husband anywhere to be found in her office. She had talked to Kathy many times about the problems that Anthony and her had, and Kathy confirmed that her and her husband had shared the same difficulties but Kathy’s husband was as much of a workaholic as she was and they had managed to find a happy medium by scheduling at least 3 vacations a year together and giving completely during those times with no cell phones or email at all. It was a compromise that worked for them, but one that Britney was sure would never appease Anthony. She couldn’t imagine Anthony ever being willing to be satisfied with three weeks uninterrupted a year. He wanted to be with her all the time and he someday wanted a family. She wanted these things too, but she really wanted a career as well. She would have to learn how to balance it, if she wanted that family with Tony. The more she thought about it, the more she that she might want that family with him.

Britney glanced the computer screen again and realized that Kathy had left her email open. A new email popped up from Samantha, “Kathy, please let me know if there is anything that I can do. I will handle Britney’s accounts until you get back. Please call us as soon as you hear anything.”

Britney wanted to read more of the email. It was a reply message to something that Kathy had sent. She wondered if she could touch the mouse; after all, she had been able to walk through doors how stable could her body be. Wait a minute. This was a dream. And if she wanted to scroll that mouse she could. She grabbed for the mouse and was able to hold it. She scrolled down the email and read that she had been in a car accident. Britney remembered that she had been in the car on the way to work. She had been thinking that it was time to end things with Anthony and then her favorite song came on the radio. She remembered singing along with the radio but she couldn’t remember anything after that. Had she hurt someone else? Had she driven off of the road? She couldn’t remember anything.

Thursday Story-Telling The Intervention Chapter 5

Anthony knew that he had better call her office and let them know what had happened. He wasn’t sure what to tell them but he would come up with something. He walked outside and called Britney’s boss. Britney and Anthony had both become friends with her boss, Kathy, over the years and had even shared a summer at Kathy’s lake house along with Kathy and her husband. He dialed the number and listened to the ringing line, truly unsure of what to say if she answered.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Kathy? It’s me, Anthony.”

“Hey Tony. What’s up?”

He couldn’t help but be a little frustrated at the happiness in her voice. But he knew that she had no idea why he was calling. She couldn’t have known. “Well, Kathy, I need to tell you something. I am not exactly sure how to say this.”

“Anthony, what is going on?” her voice was suddenly full of concern.

“Britney was in an accident this morning.”

“What kind of accident?”

“A car accident; to be honest, I don’t know exactly what happened yet.”

“Oh my God. Is she ok?”

“Kathy I really don’t know yet. They won’t tell me anything. I am still in the ER waiting to find out something.”

“What can I do Ed?”

“Just pray for her Kathy and for me. I am starting to lose my cool not knowing anything. It is really killing me.”

“I know how much you love her Tony. Don’t worry she is going to be fine. I am sure of it. She has to be. I mean I have never known a woman more full of life. She is going to be fine. Really!”

“I know Kathy, everything is going to be ok.”

“Well I am going to come on down to the hospital and stay with you.”

“No, that is ok. You don’t have to. I will keep you posted. I know that she obviously isn’t going to be in today so I am sure that you have some organizing to do there. I promise I will call as soon as I know anything.”

“Well, Anthony that is sweet of you, but I am coming. She is my friend and I have to there for you too. I know the tough guy act is in full force right now, but I am sure that you could use some support right now.”

“Thanks Kathy. I appreciate it. And you know I guess I could use someone here. It might help with the nurse at the desk. She is starting to give me some pretty dirty looks.”
“You know that I care about you both greatly. And I am sure the nurse means well, she is just doing her job.”

“I know. Kathy it is going to be ok; right?”

“Yes, of course. It is going to be ok. I am sure of it.”

He hung up and walked back inside of the ER waiting room and retook his seat.

Kathy hung up the phone and looked at the wall. She couldn’t her friend had been in an accident. It sounded bad. Anthony was a tough guy. He never freaked out or lost his cool. He wouldn’t have called unless there was something really wrong. The tears came before she could stop them. She opened up and let herself cry. She wasn’t sure why she was crying. She didn’t really know anything about her friend’s situation, but she cried all the same. She knew that Britney was hurt and that was all that mattered. She looked at her computer and all the unanswered emails. She realized quickly that none of that mattered. All that mattered was her friend and making sure that she was OK. She decided to write an email to the department.

‘Good morning everyone, I need to let you all know that Britney Henson has been in a car accident. We are not sure of her status at this time. However, I will keep you all posted. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts. I will be leaving the office for the rest of the day to stay at the hospital with Britney and her family. If everyone would please keep an eye on Britney’s accounts and I will have my cell phone if you should need anything throughout the day. Thank you all for your assistance in this difficult time.’

Kathy hit send. She didn’t bother to turn her Out of Office assistant on. She didn’t care. She wanted to hurry to the hospital. In her haste she didn’t even shut down her computer. Her email was left open as she walked out the door with her purse that she had barely remembered to grab as she left. Kathy headed for the elevator as quickly as she could. She didn’t want to be stopped by employees who would know doubt want additional information about Britney’s condition which she did not have.

Thursday Story-Telling The Intervention Chapter 4

As Britney watched Anthony worry about her, she couldn’t believe this was happening. He looked so small as he returned to his seat. She had watched the encounter with the nurse from where she had been sitting, yet somehow she had heard the entire conversation as if she had been standing beside him the whole time. This had to be a dream. This was not humanly possible. She put her hand on his arm. She wanted him to know that she was there. Perhaps the touch of him could wake her from this dream.

“Anthony I am here, I am here with you.” She whispered in his ear. Anthony shivered, and she wondered if he had heard her. His face was wrapped with fear. How could she make him understand? And most importantly how could she wake up from this nightmare? She got up from beside him and floated over to the nurse at the admitting desk. She thought, that poor woman, what a job to have to deal with all of these grief-stricken people all day. She had to be a pretty tough lady. She floated behind the desk next to where the nurse was sitting and looked at the computer screen in front of her. It was a blank screen. Britney couldn’t see anything on it. Britney saw pictures of children and a wedding photo beside the screen. What a great life, to have all of that love surrounding you. This would be how the nurse handled all the stress and sadness keeping her memories of her happy family close to her, because with the kind of love in those pictures you could surely get through anything.

Britney floated back into the main emergency room leaving Anthony to sit in the chair and the nurse to her duties. She floated back through the curtain that held the room, where was on a gurney and all of those noisy machines were working hard. The doctors and nurses were still working on her. It was as if time had almost stood still while she had been away. It did not appear they were making progress as the machines had not slowed and the doctors and nurses appeared almost panicked. The thought of watching this for much longer was not appearing. She decided to take advantage of her dream and see how far her floating ability would take her. She wanted that chance to be a fly on a wall, she had to try.

Story-Telling Thursday The Intervention Chapter 3

She opens her eyes and tried to look around and quickly realized that she was actually looking down. She was watching herself below with the doctors. There were machines buzzing and beeping. Nurses were scurrying about. What had happened to her? She couldn’t remember how she had gotten here. She tried to yell to tell them she was there. She tried to tell them that she was ok. But was she? Was she dead? Was it possible? She had started the day as any other, and now she was lying in a hospital bed or rather, floating over it. She turned from herself. She couldn’t watch the doctors work. She couldn’t stand to see if they succeeded in their mission to save her body. She floated out of the room where her body lie on the gurney. She was in the main emergency room entrance and she saw nurses running and pushing wheelchairs. She saw many people that were sick or injured. She had always hated hospitals and watching this gave her a bad feeling in her chest. She decided that she needed to keep floating. Maybe this is a dream, she thought to herself. She floated out of the emergency room into the waiting room. She had floated through the automatic doors rather than them opening for her. No one could see her or hear her. She buzzed the heads of a couple of nurses passing by and they never looked up or even acknowledged the feeling. Britney wanted to continue toying with the nurses but thought better of it. They had important work to do. The thought of this being a dream kept Britney moving forward to the waiting room. She circled the room and then she saw him. Anthony was sitting there all alone. He looked so scared. He had tears in his beautiful blue eyes. She couldn’t remember ever having seen him cry. Now here he was, crying. He was crying for her. She came down from high above and sat herself in the chair beside him. He seemed so fragile sitting there with tears running down his face. Britney hoped she wasn’t dead. She hoped the doctors did what they had to do so that she could wipe those tears away. She didn’t know if they should be together but she didn’t want him hurting.

He couldn’t cry, not now. He didn’t even know what was going on with her. He wiped at his tears and cleared his throat. He suddenly got a cold chill. It was almost a breeze. He was in the middle of the waiting room but he glanced to the doors to see whom had come through them, but the door had not been opened and was not closing either.

“That was weird,” he said aloud to himself. He talked to himself a lot. She hated it. She hated that he would express a general thought with no audience intended. She would say that he could carry on a conversation with a brick wall, and she promised not to be too concerned until the wall answered back. He laughed to himself as he thought of her standing in the kitchen chiding him for talking to himself like a child with an imaginary friend. Then the twinge of guilt again, how could he sit here and laugh? He didn’t want to think nice memories of her as if she wasn’t here anymore. He needed to know what was going on. He couldn’t stand one more minute of not knowing. He walked back up to the desk. The look on the nurse’s face was not one of welcome. He made his approach all the same and never broke stride.

“Sir, I told you that I would send someone out as soon as possible. Let them spend the time needed with your girlfriend.” The nurse advised before he even asked the question. “I am all she has, and she is all I have. I just need to know that she’s going to be ok.” he found his temper flaring as he tried to make this nurse understand how important he was to her life and she was to his. Although he was not sure of how important he still was to her, but in this moment she was all that mattered to him.

“I understand that you are concerned. The doctor has said that he will come and talk with you as soon as he can. Please have a seat and wait for him.”

“I can’t sit anymore. Please can’t someone just tell me what’s going on? I need something. I can’t just keep waiting.”

“It shouldn’t be much longer. Please have a seat.”

The nurse was beginning to get to the end of her rope with him. He decided to go ahead and sit back down before she called security or something. He was a larger man and knew that when he was angry he could appear intimidating. He didn’t want the nurse to worry and get him kicked out.
